Homeowners 101: Week 12

Week 12: March 19, 2023

Coming up this week on March 22 is World Water Day! Did you know that minor household leaks can account for 10,000 gallons of water wasted every year in your home, with 10% of homes wasting 90 gallons or more per day. Nationwide, this can add up to 1 trillion gallons of water wasted each year. Water is our most precious resource, and we invite you to join us next week to learn more about protecting it. With that in mind, March can be a good month to pay special attention to your home’s water health. Spring starts this week, so keeping your sprinklers, filters, and faucets working well is important.

Copy and paste each bulleted item into your calendar. Set the recurring task based on the time frame in parentheses (monthly, weekly, etc). The week long schedule is a template to get your started. Set each of the home maintenance tasks on a day that works best for you, or ignore the ones that don't apply to your home.

Sunday:

  • Clear expired food and to-go containers out of the fridge & check your fridge’s temperature, airflow, and inside water filter. (weekly)

  • Open up all cabinets that contain pipes and make sure there are no leaks or mildew smells. (yearly)

  • Pull your garden hoses out of storage and test them in time for Spring. Make sure there are no leaks out of the length of the hose or from the water bib. (yearly)

Monday:

  • Take a break! *

o You can choose a day that is right for you, but a rest day from home maintenance is important to keep from burning out. I choose Mondays because let’s face it, work takes a big chunk out of all of us on Monday.

Tuesday:

  • Test-run your sprinklers to make sure there are no leaks. Make sure your sprinklers are not watering the sidewalks or your home (yearly)

  • Test run pool equipment such as pumps that have not been in use during the winter. (yearly)

Wednesday:

  • Replace your shower head filter cartridge. (twice yearly)

  • Tighten all your bathroom faucets, and check the health of the gaskets. (yearly)

Thursday:

  • Check all your toilets for signs of leakage (monthly):

    • Check the rubber gasket inside the tank

    • Flush the toilet and check for leaks at the hose connector

    • Make sure the water does not continuously run after a flush

  • Next week is Week 4 of Brush & Bulky item collection in Dallas.

    • Brush and bulky items may be set out beginning on the Thursday prior to your collection week through Sunday prior to your collection week. Please see the My Schedule app here to find your week and find what items are accepted.

Friday:

  • Check the perimeter of your home for underground leaks along your water lines. (yearly)

  • Check your attic for signs of water leakage, seepage, condensation, or smells. (yearly)

Saturday:

  • Check the health of your gutters, making sure none are damaged or leaking improperly (good to do this while it is raining). (yearly)

  • Make sure all water is draining away from the foundation. (yearly)

And that’s it! March is a great time to check up on your home’s water health. Happy Week 12, and happy home health!
