Homeowners 101: Week 17 & 18

Week 17 & 18: April 23 & 30, 2023

As we finish off April and get closer to Summer, we can turn our attention to preparing for the beautiful warm summer days. Things like tuning up your patio furniture, adding curb appeal, or cleaning the grill are great ways to get ready for long summer days.

Spread out these tasks over the next two weeks. Copy and paste each bulleted item into your calendar. Set the recurring task based on the time frame in parentheses (monthly, weekly, etc). The week long schedule is a template to get you started. Set each of the home maintenance tasks on a day that works best for you, or ignore the ones that don't apply to your home.

Sunday:

  • Clear expired food and to-go containers out of the fridge & check your fridge’s temperature, airflow, and inside water filter. (weekly)

  • Repair any fence damages that you observed in week 16 (yearly)

Monday:

  • Take a break! *

You can choose a day that is right for you, but a rest day from home maintenance is important to keep from burning out. I choose Mondays because let’s face it, work takes a big chunk out of all of us on Monday.

Tuesday:

  • Tune up your outdoor furniture: tighten screws, repaint, or replace cushions (yearly)

  • Clean your grill or any outdoor cooking spaces, and replace fuel tanks if applicable (yearly)

  • Boost your curb appeal by adding new solar lighting or flowering plants (yearly)

Wednesday:

  • Thin out any perennial plants that have become too crowded (yearly)

  • Clean out garage or shed (old paint, cardboard, or other spare supplies can be tossed)

  • Clean trash and recycle bins by hosing them out and wiping down the outside. (yearly)

Thursday:

  • Spruce up your front door area by cleaning, styling, or a small project like re-painting or changing out a fixture (yearly)

  • Check your AC unit by searching for damage to hoses, vacuuming out debris, ensure your drain pan is unobstructed (yearly)

  • Next week is Week 1 of Brush & Bulky item collection in Dallas. Brush and bulky items may be set out beginning on the Thursday prior to your collection week through Sunday prior to your collection week. Please see the My Schedule app here to find your week and find what items are accepted.

Friday:

  • Check attic vents and fans to make sure they are unobstructed, not stuck, rusted, or in need of repair (yearly)

  • Empty all trash bins and take the trash bins outside*

    • *Assign this to the day trash is collected at your home.

Saturday:

  • Trim all shrubs and trees away from the house now that they have had a chance to leaf out (yearly).

  • Re-stain wood fence (yearly)

And that’s it for week 17/18! Happy Spring and Happy Home Health!
