Homeowners 101: Week 13

Week 13: March 26, 2023

As the month of March comes to an end, we can’t forget about tax season. It’s important to get all your tax-related documents together, such as your mortgage statement or any repairs or home improvements you’ve made. Luckily, most mortgage companies and banks make it easy to access this information online. If you haven’t already done your taxes, spend some time this week getting together your mortgage, property tax, and repair information together.

Copy and paste each bulleted item into your calendar. Set the recurring task based on the time frame in parentheses (monthly, weekly, etc). The week long schedule is a template to get your started. Set each of the home maintenance tasks on a day that works best for you, or ignore the ones that don't apply to your home.

Sunday:

  • Clear expired food and to-go containers out of the fridge & check your fridge’s temperature, airflow, and inside water filter. (weekly)

  • Clean gutters and downspouts of any blockages (monthly)

  • Check your exterior window screens and repair any needed (yearly)

Monday:

Take a break! *

o You can choose a day that is right for you, but a rest day from home maintenance is important to keep from burning out. I choose Mondays because let’s face it, work takes a big chunk out of all of us on Monday.

Tuesday:

  • Clean the exterior of your north-facing windows (seasonal)

  • Clean and sharpen garden tools like shovels and clippers. (yearly)

Wednesday:

  • If you live in a place that uses road salt for the winter, clear it from sidewalks and entrances (yearly)

  • Check your air filters and change as needed. (monthly)

  • Weather permitting, check your roof for any signs of wind or rain damage. Pay attention to areas where shingles meet flashing. (seasonal)

Thursday:

  • Remove and clean showerheads and faucet aerators (yearly)

  • Next week is Week 1 of Brush & Bulky item collection in Dallas.

o Brush and bulky items may be set out beginning on the Thursday prior to your collection week through Sunday prior to your collection week. Please see the My Schedule app here to find your week and find what items are accepted.

Friday:

  • Clean tile grout in most frequently used bathroom (quarterly)

  • Empty all trash bins and take the trash bins outside* (weekly)

    • *Assign this to the day trash is collected at your home.

Saturday:

  • Unplug, clean, and store any portable or space heaters (yearly)

  • Check all electrical outlets to make sure they are not overburdened. Unplug any unused tools or appliances. (quarterly)

  • Trim up landscaping bushes and clear away dead or damaged shrubbery. (seasonal)

And that’s it! Happy Week 13, and happy home health!
