Homeowners 101 Week 7

Week 7: February 12, 2023

Happy Superbowl and Valentine’s Week! Show your home some love this week with a little attention and care. The month of February can be good for an interior paint or caulking project as the dry winter air can help the paint dry faster. It is also an important month to keep an eye out for damage brought on by severe winter weather, both inside and outside your home. And, as the last month before Spring starts, February is an important month for fire prevention as well.

Copy and paste each bulleted item into your calendar. Set the recurring task based on the time frame in parentheses (monthly, weekly, etc). The week long schedule is a template to get your started. Set each of the home maintenance tasks on a day that works best for you, or ignore the ones that don't apply to your home.

Sunday:

  • Take a break! * (weekly)

    • This is Superbowl Sunday, so you can schedule accordingly.

Monday:

  • Refresh this week with a bouquet of fresh flowers for your home Valentine.

  • Clear expired food and to-go containers out of the fridge & check your fridge’s temperature, airflow, and inside water filter. (weekly)

  • Deep clean your garbage disposal (monthly)

Tuesday:

  • Check the exterior of your home for ice dams or standing water (regularly)

  • Check trees and other shrubs for any winter storm damage. This is the last month to trim trees before spring.

Wednesday:

  • If you are considering re-painting a room or making an accent wall this month, continue last week’s start by testing out your paint samples. It’s a good idea to live with the samples for a while in your home to really decide if you love them.

  • Touch up paint spots in the rest of the home where needed if there are scuffs or marks on walls. (yearly)

Thursday:

  • Check your tub, shower, and sink for shrinking or damaged caulk. Repair them as soon as possible. (every 3 months)

  • Next week is Week 3 of Brush & Bulky item collection in Dallas.

    • Brush and bulky items may be set out beginning on the Thursday prior to your collection week through Sunday prior to your collection week. Please see the My Schedule app here to find your week and find what items are accepted.

Friday:

  • We’re halfway through the month, which means spring is just around the corner. Prepare for mowing season by checking your mower or setting up a mowing service.

  • While you’re out in your shed or garage checking on that mower, check for hibernating wasps or other pests. (seasonal)

  • Empty all trash bins and take the trash bins outside* (weekly)

    • *Assign this to the day trash is collected at your home.

Saturday:

  • Check the health of your water heater by checking for soot and making sure the temperature setting is correct. (quarterly)

  • Deep clean your oven and stove. (monthly depending on use)

And that’s it! This week wasn’t so painful, was it? Happy Week 7, and happy home health!
